Safety Instructions

* BE SURE TO READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS AND HEED ALL WARNINGS *

To reduce the risk of electric shock (and to keep from voiding the warranty), never open the device.

When connecting the device to AC power, be sure to use the included AC power cord, or one with identical connectors. Never remove the ground pin from the AC power cord.

Plug the device into a surge protection device whenever possible.

When connecting the device to any other components, make sure all components are powered off, and volumes are turned completely down (whenever possible).

Be sure to only clean the device with a dry cloth.

Be sure to place the device in a location with plenty of ventilation to avoid potential issues with overheating.

Introduction

Geek LPS/LPS4 is a linear power supply that has been designed to convert “dirty” AC power from wall outlets to “clean” DC power that is optimal for the Geek Out and Geek Pulse digital-to-analog converters (DACs).

This “clean” power has very low signal noise which improves the sonic quality of music, making it sound much more natural.

An additional benefit of the LPS/LPS4 is the ability to reduce the signal noise of the USB connection from the computer to the DAC, adding to the sonic improvements.

This document provides the steps necessary to setup the Geek LPS/LPS4, connect it to a computer, and connect a Geek Out/Geek Pulse DAC for audio output.

Getting Started

Rear Panel

  1. AC Wall Outlet Plug
  2. Fuse
  3. Power Switch
  4. Unit Voltage Indicator
  5. USB Source Input
  6. USB DAC Output
  7. Umbilical Power Cable Connections (0.5A/1.2A)

* Only one 1.2A power connection on LPS, four on LPS4

Installation

  1. Unbox the Geek LPS/LPS4 and remove it from the plastic wrap.
  2. Remove the AC power cable, umbilical power cable(s), and plastic feet from the box.
  3. Peel the rubber feet from the strip and attach them to the bottom corners.
  4. Connect the AC power cable to the Geek LPS/LPS4, and plug into wall outlet.
  5. Connect a USB cable (preferably LightSpeed 1G/2G/10G) to the source and USB Source input on the back of the Geek LPS/LPS4.

  • If using the Geek LPS/LPS4 with a Geek Pulse, connect a USB cable (preferably LightSpeed 1G/2G/10G) to the USB DAC output of the Geek LPS/LPS4, and the other end to the Geek Pulse USB input.

       - OR -

  • If using the Geek LPS/LPS4 with a Geek Pulse, along with a split USB cable, connect the signal/data leg of the cable to the source, the power leg to the USB DAC output of the Geek LPS/LPS4, and the other end to the Geek Pulse USB input.

  • Also, connect an umbilical power cable to a 1.2A power connection on the Geek LPS/LPS4, and the other end to the Geek Pulse. DO NOT power on the Geek Pulse until after the Geek LPS/LPS4 is powered on.

      6.  Power on Geek LPS/LPS4.

  • If using the Geek LPS/LPS4 with a Geek Out, connect the Geek Out directly to the USB DAC output (some USB extender cables will work between the Geek LPS/LPS4 and the Geek Out, but not necessarily all).

Using The Geek LPS/LPS4

Power On

When the Geek LPS/LPS4 is powered on, all of the indicator lights on the front panel will light up, regardless of whether or not there is a device being powered by it. If all indicator lights do not light up, power off the unit and check the AC power cable connection.

* If the Geek LPS/LPS4 will not power on at all, please verify the wall outlet is operational. If it is, please check the fuse next to the AC power cable and replace if necessary.

Whenever power cycling the Geek LPS/LPS4, the connected DAC (Geek Out/Geek Pulse) will need to be disconnected, then reconnected after power up as the USB handshake process needs to complete after the Geek LPS/LPS4 power on sequence.

*** IMPORTANT NOTE ***

While the Geek LPS/LPS4 was designed primarily to work with the Geek Out and Geek Pulse, it will work with other DACs.

Some DACs produced by other manufacturers have been tested, and have been found to work properly. However, many others, primarily those built using the USB Audio Device Class 1.x standard do not appear to work properly with the Geek LPS/LPS4.
